Meet the presenter

Colin Wheeler-James

Colin Wheeler-James is lead chef and co-owner of Ground Up Cookery School, an award-winning, family-owned cookery school in Devon.

With more than 30 years’ experience as a professional chef, Colin has enjoyed a varied career spanning fine dining, hospitality, development and food education. Alongside running and teaching at Ground Up Cookery School, Colin works as an Executive Development Chef and specialises in foraging, fermentation and sustainable cookery, bringing professional technique to ingredients that are often overlooked or underused.

Ground Up Cookery School was named Food Drink Devon’s Best Cookery School 2025/26 and received the Gold Sustainability Pioneer Award 2025. Colin and the school have also featured on BBC Two’s Marcus Wareing’s Tales from a Kitchen Garden.

Having previously lived in Dartmouth for many years Colin returns to a town that has played an important part in his career, bringing together professional technique, wild and seasonal ingredients, and his belief that sustainable cooking should, above all, taste fantastic.

The Cookery School

Ground Up Cookery School is a purpose-built, award-winning, family-owned cookery school in the Devon countryside, specialising in foraging, fermentation and world cuisines. Its eclectic programme of hands-on courses also takes in everything from fish and shellfish to baking, patisserie and seasonal cookery.

Food here is about discovery. Courses are relaxed, sociable and properly hands-on, combining professional chef knowledge with ingredients, techniques and flavours you might not otherwise encounter.

Named Food Drink Devon’s Best Cookery School 2025/26 and Gold Sustainability Pioneer 2025, Ground Up has also featured on BBC Two’s Marcus Wareing’s Tales from a Kitchen Garden.

For Dartmouth Food Festival, Ground Up is going mobile, bringing a pop-up cookery school to the festival with four completely different workshops. Expect wild and foraged ingredients, flavours from around the world and plenty of opportunities to roll up your sleeves and cook.
