Dartmouth Academy Cook-Off Challenge 2020
Studying at home, and unable to gain access to the Academy’s practical kitchen facilities, Year 9 and Year 10 hospitality students were set a ‘Cook Off Challenge’.
Organised by Jenny Chanter, Hospitality Teacher at the Dartmouth Academy, students were required to design, prepare and photograph their own healthy two-course meal, and provide a commentary about it.
Entries were judged by Darren Comer (Ashburton Cookery School) and Joanna Gaukroger (a former HM Inspector of Schools, and further education college principal).
The standard of entries was extremely high… but as with all competitions there has to be a winner.
First place was awarded to Archie French who produced an updated Homity Pie and a seasonal Brown Betty as pictured below. The judges particularly liked his thoughtful commentary about use of seasonal produce and methods of cooking to retain flavour and nutritional values.

Joint second place went to Rosey Elliott for her Fillet Steak and Eliza Aubrey for her Lamb Chops as pictured below, who demonstrated very high standards of cooking and presentation in their dishes.

Jonathan Dolphin’s Pork Fillet and Chocolate Tarte and Riley Andrews’ Lemon Sole, as pictured below, gained ‘highly commended’
